What is a lipoma?
A lipoma is a fatty tumor. Lipomas are the most common type of growth below the skin. Despite being called tumors, lipomas are generally harmless, but they can be unsightly or embarrassing.
It’s not clear what causes them, but they seem to be more common in men and women between the ages of 40 and 60. If you have a family history of lipomas, you may be more likely to develop them.
Lipomas form when a lump of fat collects between the skin and the muscle below. They can appear anywhere, but they’re most common on the upper body, arms, and thighs.
When should I visit the doctor for lipomas?
Noticing a lump somewhere on your body can be alarming, but lipomas are usually harmless. If you notice a lump or swelling, don’t hesitate to make an appointment to have it examined.
Lipomas are often easy to diagnose with a physical exam. They may feel mushy or doughy when pressed, and move easily below the skin. Most lipoma tumors are less than two inches across.
Sometimes, lipomas can be bigger or even painful. If you have a lipoma that’s larger than two inches wide or if you have a painful lipoma, the team at Elite Dermatology can recommend a treatment strategy that’s right for you.
How are lipomas treated?
Most of the time, lipomas aren’t a sign of a more serious health condition. If your lipoma is small and painless, the doctors at Elite Dermatology may recommend watchful waiting. The team can monitor any changes and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
But lipomas can be painful in some cases, particularly if it bumps against a nerve or it has blood vessels running through it. Some people find that large lipomas are embarrassing and change the way clothes fit.
Lipomas can be removed with surgery.
