Botox and Dysport Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a medication that is made from a toxin that temporarily blocks nerve signals to your brain, preventing your muscles from contracting. This reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on your face.
What are the benefits of Botox injections?
Botox injections provide several benefits as a nonsurgical treatment that reduces the appearance of wrinkles. The team at Pure Dermatology specializes in administering Botox injections catered towards your individual muscle pattern, optimizing your cosmetic outcome.
Botox injections may also be used to sculpt the face. These may include injections into the muscles of mastication (the masseters) to reduce the width of your jaw and even help with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. In another common procedure, botox is used to evert the lips in a procedure called a "lip flip," which can add a natural pout to your lips.
How do Botox injections work?
When you arrive at Pure Dermatology for your appointment, the team discusses your medical history and will take a variety of photos of facial expression to track your progress.
To begin the procedure, your dermatologist will use a thin needle and a small amount of botulinum toxin to inject the Botox into your skin and muscles. The amount of injections varies depending on the area you want to address.
Your dermatologist recommends that you refrain from rubbing your face for at least 24 hours after the procedure to prevent the Botox from spreading to other areas. You should also avoid physical activity for at least 24 hours and avoid lying down for three to four hours after your procedure.
Most patients notice positive results within 3 days following their procedure, with effects typically lasting up to 3-4 months.
